What Is BOTOX?
BOTOX is a medication that is synthesized in the lab and injected into the skin. It acts to temporarily relax muscles. The wrinkles between the eyebrows, the wrinkles on the forehead, and the wrinkles around the eyes are caused by contraction of the underlying muscles. When the muscle contracts, it wrinkles the overlying skin. BOTOX prevents the muscle from contracting; and, Voila...no wrinkles.
BOTOX has been used in the United States for more than 20 years and is an extremely safe medication. The primary function of BOTOX is to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles, such as crow's feet around the eyes. BOTOX can also treat forehead lines and "angry" lines between the eyebrows.
BOTOX can be used for almost everyone, takes just a few seconds to administer and is virtually painless. The effects of BOTOX take about 4 to 6 days to take effect, and each treatment lasts for about 12 to 14 weeks. A BOTOX competitor, DYSPORT®, is now available and is becoming a preferred treatment for many patients. Where Can BOTOX Be Used?
