Laser Skin Resurfacing in the Houston Area

Don't like the way your skin looks and feels? How would you like to change that, and get softer, more supple skin? It's time to consider peels, dermabrasion, or laser skin resurfacing in the Houston area. Here's what it's all about.

In laser resurfacing, sometimes called a "laser peel," a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser or Erbium Laser is used to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by layer. The procedure is most commonly used to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. However, it is also effective in treating facial scars or areas of uneven pigmentation and precancerous lesions. Laser resurfacing may be performed on the whole face or in specific regions. Often, Dr. Athré performs the procedure in conjunction with another cosmetic operation, such as eyelid surgery or a face lift in the Houston area.

A Word about the Laser

Laser resurfacing is performed using a beam of laser energy which vaporizes the upper layers of damaged skin at specific and controlled levels of penetration. Laser resurfacing may offer a number of advantages over other resurfacing methods: precision, little (if any) bleeding and less post-operative discomfort.

All resurfacing treatments work essentially the same way. First, the outer layers of damaged skin are stripped away. Then, as new cells form during the healing process, a smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin surface appears. Houston laser resurfacing by Dr. Athré removes damaged skin to achieve this younger appearance. He'll talk with you about your professional-strength skin care options to help your skin look refreshed.

The Best Candidates for Laser Resurfacing

In many cases, facial wrinkles form in localized areas, such as near the eyes or around the mouth. The laser can be precisely controlled so that only these specific areas are targeted. Dr. Athré will evaluate your skin characteristics during the consultation and make recommendations accordingly. Typically pre-laser skin care regimens are started at least two weeks prior to your procedure to prevent pigmentation problems and ensure optimal results.

Peels and Dermabrasion

Chemical peels and dermabrasion are two other treatments to resurface and change the overall appearance of your skin. The strength of peels used and the depth of dermabrasion provided at Athré Surgical Associates are drastically different to what is provided at a day spa-type facility. Physician-grade resurfacing can rejuvenate skin, remove acne scarring, and remove age spots and freckles.

Planning Your Surgery

Not every practitioner who offers laser surgery and skin resurfacing procedures has the same level of experience and skill with laser use. Though laser surgery is very safe, complications like pigmentary changes and scarring can occur. In today's environment where laser procedures are commonly done at spas and salons, it is important to find a practitioner who is skilled and experienced in laser procedures.

Dr. Athré has performed numerous cases using many different types of lasers and peels on many different types of skin. His training as a facial plastic surgeon allows him to tailor each laser procedure to the patient's individual needs, skin type, skin color, and skin texture.
