C is a pleasant 4 year old with prominent ears. Prominent ears run in C's family. C's dad also has prominent ears and was teased incessantly in school. Therefore, he did not want C to undergo the same type of trauma. C's mom and dad decided to "pin-back" C's ears. This procedure is called otoplasty. Otoplasty is usually done right before children enter school at age 4-5 years. This is so, they are not teased once they start school. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and takes about 1.5 hours. Patients can go home the same day. The procedure is not painful for the child, and pain medications as well as antibiotics are prescribed. C had the procedure done at the hospital because of his age. Children need specialized equipment, which primarily only hospitals have. The procedure can be done in the office, however, in adults. After his procedure, C went home and returned to have his dressing removed approximately 1 week after surgery. C's mom said that he was fussy for a day or so, but was completely back to normal within 2-3 days. The pictures shown here are of C 2 weeks after surgery. He still has some swelling, His mother is happy with the results, and C is back to his normal self.
